The 15-Minute Kitchen Reset: A Spring Decluttering Checklist

Spring has a way of making every other room in the house look tidy by comparison. The kitchen is the one space that gets used daily, touched by everyone in the house, and somehow still ends up with three garlic crushers and a drawer that doesn't quite close.
Good news: you don't need a weekend to sort it out. You need fifteen minutes and a plan.
Start with the bench, not the cupboards
Before you open a single door, clear everything off your benchtop that doesn't belong there. Appliances you use weekly can stay. Everything else — the bread maker from 2019, the stack of takeaway menus, the "I'll deal with it later" pile — goes into a box for now. You'll sort it properly once the surfaces are clear, but clearing the bench first gives you somewhere to actually put things as you work through the rest.
The pantry: five minutes, one shelf at a time
Pull everything forward to the edge of each shelf so you can actually see what's behind the tall jars. Toss anything expired, anything doubled up, and anything you bought with good intentions eighteen months ago. If your pantry is a deep cupboard where the back third is a mystery, that's less about your habits and more about the storage — a pull-out pantry system brings everything to eye level instead of making you excavate for it, which is a lot of why things get lost back there in the first place.
Drawers: sort by how often you reach for it
Group everything by frequency of use, not by type. The things you touch every day — everyday cutlery, the good knife, tea towels — belong in the drawer closest to where you stand. Specialty tools you use twice a year can live further away or higher up. This is also the moment to admit you don't need four sets of measuring spoons.
Under-bench cupboards: the corner test
Open your corner cabinet and time yourself finding the roasting pan. If it takes longer than it should, that's a storage design problem, not a you problem — standard corner cabinets waste a huge amount of usable space because so much of it is physically unreachable without getting on your knees. A corner pull-out solution turns that dead zone into space you'll genuinely use.
The fridge and freezer: one shelf, one pass
Quick pass only — check dates, consolidate condiments, and toss anything freezer-burnt beyond recognition. Group by category (dairy, sauces, leftovers) so putting things away becomes automatic rather than a puzzle every time.
Keep the reset going
The honest truth about decluttering is that a tidy kitchen only stays tidy if there's a sensible place for everything to go back to. If you've done this exact reset before and found yourself back at square one within a few months, it's worth looking at why — usually it's not a discipline problem, it's a storage one.
If your kitchen has more clutter than cupboard space can reasonably handle, a free phone consultation with our team can talk you through what's actually possible without a renovation. Sometimes the fix is smaller than you'd think.
