Pantries have a way of quietly accumulating things nobody actively decided to keep. Spring is as good a reason as any to go through it properly — not just to make it look tidy for a week, but to actually free up space you'll keep using.

1. Spices you can't remember buying

If you have to squint at the label to work out whether it's five months or five years old, it's probably five years old. Ground spices lose potency after about a year; whole spices last longer but still don't last forever. Toss anything you can't place, and don't rebuy in bulk — a smaller, fresher rotation takes up less room and tastes better anyway.

2. The condiment graveyard

Three half-used jars of the same chutney, a sauce you bought for one recipe in 2023, and something unlabelled in the door of the fridge that's migrated into pantry territory. Consolidate what's left, toss what's expired, and resist buying a new jar until the old one's finished.

3. Mismatched storage containers

Every pantry has a few containers with no matching lid, and lids with no matching container. They take up real shelf space while being functionally useless. Recycle what you can, and consider replacing the whole mismatched set with uniform containers that actually stack — it makes a bigger visual difference than almost anything else on this list.

4. Single-use gadgets you've used once

The avocado slicer. The egg separator. The gadget that does one very specific thing you tried once. If it hasn't come out of the cupboard in the last twelve months, it's not earning its shelf space.

5. Duplicate packaging and bulk-buy overflow

Multiple half-empty bags of the same flour, three opened boxes of pasta, or bulk-buy items still in their original bags rather than sealed containers. Consolidate into one container per item — it's easier to see what you actually have, and you'll stop accidentally buying more of something you already own.

Once it's decluttered, keep it that way

The frustrating part of a pantry declutter is watching it slide back to chaos within a couple of months — not because you got lazy, but because a deep, dark cupboard makes it genuinely hard to see what's in there, so things get pushed to the back and forgotten all over again. A pull-out pantry system solves that at the source: everything slides forward to eye level, so nothing disappears into the back corner to expire quietly.

If your pantry clutter keeps coming back no matter how many times you clear it out, it might be worth a proper look at whether the storage itself is working against you.
